How To Play The Exquisite Corpse

Exquisite Corpse is a game that’s equally fun for adults and children. It’s fun for anyone of any skill level, as long as they have a little creativity. Beginners and experts alike can enjoy it equally, and no matter how many times you play, the game never repeats itself.

1. Take a decent-sized piece of paper. We generally used a third of a sheet of 8.5” by 11”, but you can use whatever size you would like.

2. Fold it. Most often, we folded it into thirds. This will be how many people will be drawing on this piece of paper.

3. Draw on the blank top portion of the paper, above the fold. Anything you want. Just make sure it can connect down to the next portion.

4. Once you’ve drawn your portion, draw little lines down into the next section, and fold it over so that the drawn portion is hidden, but you can still see the connecting lines.

5. Hand it to another person.

6. Have them do steps 3, 4, and 5. I suggest using either the same writing utensil or at least a similarly colored one.

7. When all the sections have been used, unfold and enjoy what your collective creativity has created.

Note: This is not my game. It is a game that was played by the surrealists. In part, they liked to see the similarities in what everyone would draw, even though when they drew they couldn’t see the other drawings.
